Innovative Sustainable Feeds: The Future of Aquaculture Nutrition

“Revolutionizing Aquaculture Feed: Exploring Sustainable Alternatives”

The sustainability of aquaculture is closely tied to the feeds we use. Traditional fishmeal and fish oil have environmental and economic drawbacks, prompting the need for innovative alternatives. Let’s delve into the most promising sustainable feed options:

  • Algae-Based Feeds: Have you experimented with incorporating algae into your feed formulations? Share your experiences regarding fish growth, health, and any challenges faced.
  • Insect Meal: Insects like black soldier fly larvae are gaining traction as protein sources. Have you used insect-based feeds in your operations? How do they compare nutritionally and economically to traditional feeds?
  • Plant-Based Proteins: Can plant proteins, such as soy or pea protein, fully replace marine ingredients without compromising fish health and product quality? What are the limitations and successes you’ve observed?

We’re interested in your insights, trials, and opinions on how these alternatives could shape the future of sustainable aquaculture.

Really interested to hear from people that have worked with black soldier fly meal!

Hi Aquaman,

In Agronutris we have worked with insects for over 12 years.

We now produce from our new factory in Northeast of France with aquaculture and the pet industry as our main customers.

in my opinion, the insect industry is still in the early beginnings with a lot more to come !

Hi Gilanes,
Wow, that’s a long history. Have you built any experience in commercial operations in aquaculture? Who are the users in aquaculture?

Hi Aquaman,

Yes Insect meals is becoming more and more included in aquafeeds than many may think (petfood is also increasingly using it, both as puree and meal claiming properties especially in Hypoallergenic feed)…

In Norway, we started with POC with the Millenial Salmon Project where all marine ingredienses in feed was replaced by alga (fishoil) and insect meal (fishmeal) successfully. Salmon Group (the second largest feed user in Norway after Mowi) has insect meal in their SG feed formulation, Eide Fjordbruk appears in Ilaks.no today promoting use of insect meal and Biomar went public at the St. Andrews event last week promoting special properties in insect meal (particulary in the freshwater phase incl. microbial peptides) … so yes I would say its commercially on the move. Biomar, Cargill/Ewos, Skretting and Aller Aqua all use insect meals in varying amounts.

Sounds great, would love to hear from some of the farmers you mention about their experiences!
